The libretto of 'The Bartered Bride”, the second of Smetana's nine operas, was written for Smetana by the poet and journalist Karel Sabina. The subject chosen for the comic opera was the story of a pair of lovers in the countryside whose relationship is disapproved of by their parents. It is set during the festival at a village church anniversary. The final form of the work, which soon came to be regarded as a national opera, was preceded by a relatively difficult genesis. The opera was written between 1863 and 1865 and was premiered on 30 May 1866 at the Provisional Theatre in Prague, where the composer's last version of the work was also performed in 1870. This vocal score contains the musical text of the critical edition of Smetana's own vocal score. The newly-set edition contains both Czech and German vocal texts - the German singing translation is by Kurt Honolka. Für Klavier-Smetana?s piano sketch Macbeth also known as Macbeth and the Witches after William Shakespeare?s tragedy originated in 1859 while the composer was living in Sweden. Some scholars believe that it was meant to be scored for full orchestra. The work?s dark and gloomy mood is connected with the death of Smetana?s wife Katharina on 19 April 1859.Macbeth only appeared in print posthumously in 1912. It soon entered the piano repertoire and in the course of the 20th century it was scored for orchestra by Otakar Jeremiá? and for piano and orchestra by Jarmil Burghauser. Smetana's 'Vlatava' can be regarded as a prime example of programme music. The composition is a hymn to Smetana's home country of Bohemia describing the course of the river Vltava from the source to its junction with the river Elbe.The work describes the course of the river Vltava starting from the two small sources of the warm Vltava and the cold Vltava until the two streams merge. The course of the Vltava is through forests and meadows and further through the landscape where many merry celebrations are being held; a dance of the water nymphs in the moonlight castles magnificent houses and ruins proudly appearing on nearby rocks; the Vltava forming eddies in the rapids ofSt. Johann flowing as a large river toward Prague until the fortress of Vysehrad appear and eventually disappearing in the distance to flow majestically into the river Elbe. Vltava (The Moldau) is the most famous and frequently performed tone poem from the cycle Má Vlast by the Czech composer Bed ich Smetana. It was written between 20 November and 8 December 1874 but only in 1879-1880 with the completion of Má Vlast did it appear in print when Urbánek issued it in full score along with a version for Piano duet.Owing to the large number of misprints in the Urbánek first edition Hugh Macdonald has based this new edition on the autograph score with cross-references to the first edition and the composer?s own version for Piano duet.
